10 Practical Tips for Decluttering When It Feels Overwhelming

Decluttering your home can be daunting, especially when every item feels like it carries some value or emotional connection. These 10 tips will help you sort through your belongings, identify what truly matters, and let go of what no longer serves you. Remember, the goal is to create a home that adds value and peace to your life.

1. Ask Yourself: When Did I Last Use This?

A simple yet effective question. Items you use, need, and enjoy regularly are likely adding value to your life. If you come across something you haven’t used in 6 months to a year—or even forgot you had—it’s probably safe to let it go.

2. Track Usage to Make Confident Decisions

If you’re unsure about how often you use something, try tracking it. For instance, in your closet, turn all your hangers backward. After wearing an item, hang it the right way. In a few months, you’ll clearly see what you haven’t worn, making it easier to part with those unused pieces.

3. Check the Condition of Items

Broken or worn-out items often stick around with the promise of future repairs. If something is truly important to you, repairing it would already be a priority. Set a deadline for repairs (and write it down). If it’s not worth the effort or cost, it’s time to let it go.

4. Let Go of Sunk Costs

It’s hard to part with expensive items, even when you no longer use or need them. But keeping these things won’t recover the money you spent. Focus on whether the item brings value to your life now, not on the price you once paid.

5. Ask Yourself Why You’re Keeping It

When you’re struggling to let go of something, ask yourself why. Is it guilt because it was a gift? Fear that you might need it someday? Once you identify the reason, it’s easier to make a rational decision and move forward.

6. Use a "Maybe Box"

If letting go feels too final, try a “maybe box.” Place items you’re unsure about in a box, seal it, and store it out of sight. Set a reminder for three months. If you haven’t thought about or needed the items in that time, you can confidently let them go.

7. Identify the Source of Clutter

Not all clutter comes from items you don’t use. Sometimes it’s caused by things that don’t have a proper place. Before organizing, declutter to remove what you don’t need. Then assign every item a “home” and make sure it’s easy to put away.

8. Stop Bringing in More Stuff

Decluttering won’t have a lasting impact if you’re constantly adding new items to your home. Be intentional about your purchases and avoid bringing home unnecessary things. Reducing what comes in will help maintain the progress you’ve made.

9. Make Decluttering a Lifestyle

Decluttering isn’t a one-time project—it’s an ongoing process. Your needs and interests will change, and new items will inevitably come into your life. Keep a donation box handy, and consistently remove items you no longer use or need.

10. Remember Your “Why”

When decluttering feels overwhelming, focus on your reasons for doing it. Are you looking for more space? Less stress? More time for loved ones or hobbies? Keep your “why” front and center to guide your decisions and stay motivated.

Transform Your Space and Simplify Your Life

Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of things—it’s about creating a home that works for you and brings you joy. With these tips, you’ll be better equipped to tackle even the hardest decluttering challenges and build a space that reflects your true priorities.
